What are the Top 5 Sacramento Christmas Tree Farms?

It’s almost that time to get a Christmas tree. Whether you like to set up your tree right after Thanksgiving, wait until December 1st, or get it barely in time for the holidays, the best time to research Sacramento Christmas tree farms is in October or November! Some of the best trees at the best farms are reservation only, and if you want to get Christmas family portraits taken, those are best done in November so that you get them back in time to be able to send out cards for the holidays.

Here are some of the top Christmas tree farms in the Greater Sacramento Area:

McBurney’s Christmas Tree Farm is a beautiful scenic tree farm in Grass Valley that offers several different types of trees. Walk among the rows of trees to choose your own and then either chop it down yourself or ask a staff member to do so for you.

When searching “Sacramento Christmas Tree Farm” you probably weren’t expecting my top answer to be in Grass Valley. But the truth is that the best tree farms are in the mountains on the outskirts of the Sacramento Area. In Sacramento proper, you can definitely find closeby trees, but they will be shipped in, often long distances, and in a parking lot surrounded by city lights and honking cars. If you drive just a bit further (usually just 45-55 minutes) you get into the naturally growing tree farms where you can find scenic farms where you can walk through rows and rows of trees to choose your own living tree to chop and take home with you. It’s the opportunity to not just buy a tree, but make a Christmas experience and activity out of it. It will be a delight for kids, and just as fun for you.

McBurney’s Christmas Tree Farm is a perfect example of this. The farm is extremely scenic, rows and rows of Christmas trees, but also surrounded on the outskirts by much larger trees. You definitely feel like you are walking around in nature to choose your perfect tree. In my opinion, it is THE most scenic tree farm in the area, which is why it has earned the number one spot for me. McBurney’s is open daily starting in October, from 9am to 5pm. They sell two types of trees: Douglas Firs or White Firs, and the friendly staff will help you with both cutting (if desired) and loading and netting (no added charge).

One of my favorite things about this farm as a family photographer of course is how scenic it is and that photographers and their clients are welcome! It really is the best location to get christmas photos taken in my opinion, much better than any fake backdrop or setup. One thing to consider however is that portraits are only allowed before Thanksgiving (as it just gets too busy in December during peak tree buying season), so if you want to get Christmas photos booked with a photographer (Hint: I’d be a great choice ;-) ) make sure to do so in October or November.

Number 2: Davis Ranch L.L.C.

Fast Facts:

Location: Sloughhouse (13211 Jackson Rd, Sloughhouse, CA 95683)

Types of Trees: Douglas Fir, Nordman Fir, Deodar Cedar, Costal Grand Fir, Monterey Pine

Price Range: $47.99 for any tree any height

Can you chop your own? Yes!

Website: https://www.davisranchproduce.com/christmas-trees

If you live in Rancho Cordova area, or elsewhere in the Southeast side of Sacramento, this is the Christmas tree farm for you, as Sloughhouse is only located about 25 minutes out of town in that direction. Here too you can walk the rows of trees and choose your own tree to cut down yourself. A definite benefit to Davis Ranch is their single price for any sized tree which is an especially good deal the larger you go. I also liked the wide selection of trees they have available. An added benefit is that Davis Ranch is a working farm with a large variety of other produce available, so you can come for the christmas tree but stay for a variety of produce as well. They even offer You Pick options at certain times of year for you to go pick your own.

While a working farm certainly beats a parking lot stall for scenery, it doesn’t quite have the mountainous nostalgic appeal of some of the Grass Valley and Apple Hill farms, which is why I am giving it the second rank. But as far as tree variety, convenience and pricing, it is definitely one of the best!

Number 3: Green Acres Nursery and Supply

Fast Facts:

Location: Multiple Locations in Sacramento, Roseville, Elk Grove, Orangevale, Folsom and Auburn

Types of Trees: Noble Fir, Nordman Fir and a few more varieties

Price Range: Not Finalized

Can you chop your own? No.

Green Acres is more regular store than Sacramento Christmas tree farm, but a definite bonus of this is the convenience in being able to purchase a tree. Green Acres has multiple locations all across the Greater Sacramento area, which means they are likely an easy drive for you, regardless of where you live. They offer a full service experience. A staff member will place the selected tree in a tree shaker to remove excess needles, make a fresh cut, and then bag and load the tree into the customer car. Beyond the normal Christmas trees, they also offer fresh wreaths, garlands, Christmas decorations, poinsettias, and even Christmas cactus!

Number 4: Silveyville Christmas Tree Farm

Fast Facts:

Location: Dixon (6248 Silveyville Rd, Dixon, CA 95620)

Types of Trees: Incense Cedars, Leyland Cypress, Coastal Redwoods, Monterey Pine, Douglas, Grand, Noble Firs

Price Range: $87 for any tree no matter the height, $72 and up for select varieties

Can you chop your own? Yes! Select Varieties

Website: https://www.silveyvilletreefarm.com/christmas-tree-farm/

Silveyville is another super scenic Christmas tree farm located on the opposite side of the Greater Sacramento Area, in Dixon California. As such, it is an ideal christmas tree farm for families located in Davis, Woodland or West Sacramento. It does have some of the highest prices compared to some of the other christmas tree farms, but makes up for it with one of the widest selection of trees, offers self cutting services for select tree types and has a scenic location. Like McBurneys, Silveyville allows photoshoots, though it does require setting up these sessions ahead of time. Unlike many of the other farms, Silveyville in addition offers more Christmas activities such as a Christmas village and Santa Sleighrides. It is also one of the few locations which allows dogs to be brought along.

Number 5: Mikey’s Christmas Trees

Fast Facts:

Location: Multiple Locations (Carmichael, Roseville, Natomas, Citrus Heights)

Types of Trees: Noble Fir, Nordmann Fir, Grand Fir and Douglas Fir

Price Range: $74.25 no matter the size or type of tree

Can you chop your own? No.

Website: https://mikeyschristmastrees.com/

Mikey’s Christmas Trees are probably the most like what you would imagine of a christmas tree farm in the city. There are multiple locations that set up seasonally on empty lots. Mikey’s specializes specifically on different types of Fir trees, and sells them all at the same price, which can be a great deal for a large tree but potentially less of a good deal for a smaller one. Mikey’s trees are harvested in Oregon and arrive in the lot within 24-36 hours of being chopped down, which ensures fresh trees, though not as fresh as if you chopped your own as is the option at a few of the other Christmas tree farms. One unique thing about Mikey’s Christmas Trees is that they also offer painted trees, including bright blue and bright purple! This is certainly an offering that you cannot find in most other christmas tree farms.
