Yuba City Summer Activities for Toddlers and Kids

Three kids run while holding hands at Feather River Parkway during a Yuba City Summer

Maybe your kid or toddler is like mine: he needs to get out of the house at least once a day to be bearable. Otherwise my happy little boy very quickly turns into a cooped up stir crazy whiny gremlin. Can you relate? This is of course a problem when temperatures quickly soar to above 100F in the summer in our area. We have to be a bit more creative in finding activities to do while staying cool enough. This article will share some of my favorite places to go in the Yuba and Sutter County area to get out of the house for a fun summer activities while still beating the heat. All of these suggestions are geared for babies, toddlers and elementary aged children. Let’s Start!

Number 1 : Go to the Playzeum

One of the best places for a variety of ages to have a ton of fun is the Playzeum in Yuba City. With a variety of different rooms for a variety of ages filled with lots of toys and pretend play opportunities, the Playzeum offers something for all ages.

My Favorite Part:

My favorite part of the playzeum is the variety of themed rooms that are constantly being changed, and the plethora of opportunities for pretend play. The Playzeum has all kinds of play setups for kids to let their imagination run wild from a grocery store to ice cream shop to a boat with fishing gear! I also love the huge fenced outdoor area, which is definitely my son’s favorite part no matter the temperatures.

Number 2: Yuba or Sutter County Library

Not only can you go to the local libraries to check out books or find a nice calm air-conditioned space to read some books, but the county libraries also host a huge array of activities every single day, but especially in the summer. From daily morning playtime for the littles to fun lego building and crafting activities for older childent to extra special weekend events, the library has it all and more, and completely for free! Definitely make sure to pick up a monthly calendar of kids activities from your local county library, whether that is on the Yuba City side or on the Marysville side. Or grab both and pick and choose your favorite activities!

Hours:

The Yuba and Sutter County Libaries have DIFFERENT hours, so it’s important to keep track of both as it will allow you a larger of variety of hours to attend if you pick and choose which one to go to. They are only about 10 minutes away from each other, making them accessible for pretty much anyone in the area.

Sutter County Library: Regular library hours are 9am to 6pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, with the library closed on Sundays. In addition, they host nearly daily special events that vary on the time. I find that the Sutter County Library Facebook Page is the easiest place to find the events. Especially of note is the weekly Toddler Time and Story Times which take place at 11am Tuesdays through Thursdays. They also offer game nights and lego club, usually starting around 4pm.

Yuba County Library: Regular library hours are 12am to 6pm Tuesday through Friday and 9am - 1am on Saturday. The library is closed Sundays and Mondays. Like Sutter, they host daily special events as well, including at times that the regular library is closed. Once again the Yuba County Library Facebook Page is a great source for the monthly event schedule. Some weekly staples are First Five Story Time at 10-12 every Tuesday through Thursday for ages 0-5 and afternoon activities from from 2:30 - 4:30 for the 5-13 crowd.

Location Address:

  • Sutter Library: 750 Forbes Ave Yuba City, CA 95991

My favorite part of the library is how many varied activities they have for all ages and interests. No matter what your child’s age, gender, or hobbies, there is something for everyone. And best of all, it’s all free!

Number 3: Gauche Aquatic Park

Getting into the water is definitely the best thing to do in the heat, and the Gauche Aquatic Park is THE nicest place in Yuba City for kids and toddlers. Boasting some awesome slides but also a really nice shallow pool area for the littles, kids, toddlers and even babies of all ages will enjoy keeping cool. They offer public swim, tot time, swim lessons and more!

My Favorite Part:

My favorite part is the Tot Time, which is Fridays from 9:30-11am. ONLY babies and toddlers from 0-5 years old are allowed during this time which is such a great way for them to experience the park without the intimidation of other kids that might be playing rough or scare them with splashing. Only $5 a session!

Number 4: Go For A Walk At Yuba Sutter Marketplace

We go on walks daily which gets REALLY tough on those hottest days where it doesn’t even properly cool off in the evenings or mornings. Yuba Sutter Marketplace to the rescue! We pack up our stroller and head to the mall and spend a lovely hour exercising in the air conditioning while also doing some window shopping and maybe some splurging too.

My Favorite Part:

My favorite part is being able to go on a walk even on the hottest days in beautiful air conditioning. I of course also love wandering the many stores from Hobby Lobby to Ross to Burlington Coat Factory too and my son also loves all the things to see from his stroller. There is a decent play area, lots of food options, and my favorite part is splurging on a pretzel!

Number 5: Go For a Swim at Feather River Parkway

If you are looking for a great nature area right in town, Feather River Parkway is the spot for you! Besides offering over a mile’s worth of walking trails, there is a great beach area that is shaded and comfortable even on the hottest days. Grab a blanket, some swim suits, or maybe just a book, and hang out in the MUCH cooler temperatures next to the water. Swimming is not required! Even last year, I took my then 8 month old here all the time and we just sat on a blanket in the sand and enjoyed ourselves!

You may be at the park anytime between Sunrise until Sunset. In the summer, it’s usually better to go to the park in the morning or evening and skip midday, in order to have the cooler temperatures and a lot of shade.

My Favorite Part:

My favorite part is simply sitting on the beach right next to the water. It’s amazing how much cooler it is here even on the hottest days! There are huge mature trees that shade the area for most of the day, which means it can be up to 20 degrees cooler that anywhere else, without even entering the water! My dog’s favorite part is definitely swimming for sticks in the water and my son’s favorite part is laughing at my dog!
